DFLA Demo#1 Birmingham 24th March 2018

Birmingham and it’s the first major demo by the newly formed DFLA. Supporting Justice 4 the 21 campaign, the DFLA and Veterans Against Terrorism combined to create a crowd of 5000 people, including veterans from the elderly Ghurkha regiment who were cheered as they approached the stage area by all the respectful football lads in attendance from across the country.

Well done to everyone for making the day a huge success.

I CAN only begin this week’s column by saluting one of the most extraordinary acts of support and bravery the Justice4the21 famiies have ever seen.

Ian Williams, one of our supporters from Preston, pushed himself through the pain barrier to walk 106 miles from there to Birmingham in just a fraction over two days.

It is hard for us to find the words to show our appreciation for this astonishing feat.

So let me pass on what Ian said after arriving in Birmingham.

“It took me 52 hours in total to complete it just over the two days, which included getting lost five times, going through a farmers field on a public footpath and nearly getting knocked down by a lorry in the early hours of last Friday morning on an unlit country road.

“Apart from a ten minute break, I did the first leg to Newcastle under Lyme in 29 hours, and I was in agony to say the least.

“I said at St Philips when I finished that it wasn’t about me or the walk, but about the 21 people that are no longer with us.

“I wanted to do something that would highlight the Justice4the21 campaign and if I managed to change somebody’s opinion or even make someone aware of what’s going on, well then I will be happy.”

What an absolute hero this kind, unassuming man is.

He is calling himself ‘an adopted Brummie for life.’

He will certainly always be a particularly precious member of the Justice4the21 ‘family’ of supporters.

He hopes to raise £1,000 for the campaign.

DFLA MOBILISE FOR THEIR FIRST MAJOR DEMO IN THE NORTH EAST – SEP 15th 2018

After a spike in sexual assaults and rapes recently the women in Sunderland have had enough of living in fear and have organised a couple of small demo’s to raise awareness of the situation. Unfortunately their concerns have not been suficiently addressed by the local council and police service so they reached out to the DFLA for help and advice as they had heard of some of our previous success at making change happen in towns like Telford and Rochdale.

Two of the DFLA action against sex crimes team were invited by the local DFLA Sunderland Division to come and hear first hand from the lasses that have been brave enough to put themselves out there and organised the previous actions.

Our team unfortunately discovered a number of burning issues that need to be addressed urgently and advised a plan of action that concerened members of the community should take to ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and demand action from yet another northern town with a labour run council that just not seem to give a damn about the safety of its women and children.

We are helping to organise community meetings where members of the public are invited to come and share their experiences of crime they have been victims of or witnessed, so that we can document a full picture of what people are suffering to present to the council and demand action to make everyone safe.

We will combine the public feedback with our own research and produce documents to be hand delivered to the police and the council when we arrive en masse to support the women and children of Sunderland for a DFLA demo on 15th September. We will require written responses to our demands for change and will act accordingly upon receipt of those replies.

A full report will follow.
